while this may seem offtopic, the more of us potential developers/researchers that have our little hands on one of these, the more work that will get done on them. please contribute to this thread any online/offline locations for getting these devices. please keep in mind that people interested in this project may be all over the world.
to start with:
electronic goldmine (in the USA, will ship internationally)
starter kit - 49.99USD (includes base station)
only the messenger - 23.99USD (no base station)

Walmart is also selling them in their stores. I've seen them in the computer section with all the wireless hubs.

There's a little more information on a similar device, the Zipit Messenger, on the I-Appliance BBS:

Thanks for bringing this to my attention!
I'm going to look for one of these in my area.
If anyone is interested in the ZipIt, please join the yahoo group.

I just wanted to inform that I bought an IMFree at the walmart I work at for $15 on clearance. This means we aren't going to carry them anymore. Let me clarify. Our store (#1087) won't carry them. This may or may not follow with all other walmarts in the future, but they have always been (at our store at least) very unpopular. I don't think I even sold one in the year or so we've had them. The retail when we first got them was around $60-70, it now retails for $34.94 at our store.
The reason I bought it was solely to see what kind of "hacks" there are available for it. I don't need it for AIM. But just the other day I did some modifying of my old palm zire, which I first saw on hack-a-day, and put palmorb on it, and lcd smartie on my PC. After having so much fun doing that, I started looking at other possibilities. I have no (or if you want to be nice, very little) hacking skills and have only basic C programming skills, but I'm still anxious to see what becomes of it.
