depending on how open and easy to work with the software and the hardware of these devices end up being, they could lead to many interesting uses. some i was just thinking about:

* client-to-client communication: for example using two of the devices without a basestation for chat/communication or whatever. this would most likely depend on being able to customize the firmware on the devices, which could be near impossible.

* base-to-base communication: if a cheap source for the base stations becomes available, and the interface to them is figured out, two base stations could be used for a wireless links between two computers. im not sure what the use of this would be, there must be something.

* sniffing with a client or base: if either of the devices can be convinced to sniff for data packets without being the device that the sending device is 'associated with' (similar to 'monitor mode' on 802.11 cards) then we could use one of the two (most likely the base station attached to acomputer) to sniff traffic sent too and from the imfree devices. these devices arnt really popular at all so its not like you would be able to drive down the road and pick up dozens of chat sessions (of 12 year old girls anyways), but in theory it could be neat.

by the way i have no idea about anything with these devices yet, so these are all purely theoretical high-level concepts that could be neat. please feel free to contribute to and discuss these.
